Are you a first-time manager? Promoted from your previous role or joined a new company? Congratulations! Here’s to a fresh start and a new set of challenges!

We understand that new managers may feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities ahead, have a lot of questions and maybe fears about first impressions. Which is why today we are sharing tips on ‘must have’ characteristics for new managers.

  1. Regard and Respect

People want to feel respected. To do that they must feel heard and included, When employees feel respected they tend to be more responsive. They should feel respected for their abilities, knowledge, skills, and ideas.
As such, managers need to come up with ways for team members to share their views on all things.

2. Growth Mindset

It is important for you to have a growth mindset for your team and for yourself. With this, you’ll be able to develop the necessary skills to succeed in your new role. For your team, you should have conversations about past performance, future expectations and development plans and activities. Adopt a coaching mechanism and try to manage each employee in the way best suited for each one.

3. Feedback and Recognition

Your team members will work better when they understand what is expected of them, get timely feedback and a little appreciation often for a job well done.

4. Confidence and Trust

Create an environment where your team members can easily have open, honest and sometimes difficult conversations with you — whether that’s struggling with their mental health or feeling overwhelmed by work, their personal life or the world in general.

We have highlighted these four. But there are many more great traits that managers (old and new) should display. Care to share?
